One Set to Play them All.
Riichi needs red fives. Singapore needs animals. Vietnam needs emperors, empresses, and jokers. Malaysia needs the fei. This box carries every tile the nine traditions on this site need, and more besides.
Buy a Japanese set and Singapore night is off the table – no animals, no seasons that pay. A Chinese set carries no jokers for Vietnamese or American play. Almost nobody's box includes the fei. Your first set quietly decides which mahjong you are allowed to learn.
Playing the whole family today means owning three or four regional sets – so most players never try the other games. That is the lockout. It is a packaging problem, not a mahjong problem, and it is fixable in one box.
One design system across the entire superset, from the core suits and honors to animal tiles and specialty jokers. Colors follow tradition where tradition scores: the All Green tiles of Riichi stay green edge to edge, so the hands that depend on color read at a glance.
Every set ships with one quick-reference sheet per tradition, curated by the author of the Archive's book. Setup, win requirement, and scoring at a glance: pull the tiles, pull the sheet, play.
Every tradition pulls its own selection from the superset. The counts below come straight from the Archive's variant chapters.

Yes, and more than that. The set is not limited to the nine traditions taught on this site: it can also play Zung Jung, Sichuan Bloody Mahjong, and many other regional variants not covered here. The one thing it cannot do yet is Vietnamese Modern Rules, which uses a larger joker family than this edition includes. That may become a future edition or a separate add-on later.
67 unique tile designs, 175 physical tiles in total, covering every suit, honor, and regional bonus tile the traditions on this site use between them, plus one curated cheat sheet per variant covering setup, win requirements, and scoring at a glance.
No, they are built to stand alone. The cheat sheets in the tile set cover enough to start playing on their own. The book goes deeper into strategy, scoring edge cases, and full worked examples, and its diagrams are designed to match this exact tile set, so the two pair naturally if you have both.
The Archive Set is still in design. Register your interest and you will be first to know when it is ready, with founding supporter pricing held for everyone on this list.
